Letter from the Editor

Dear beard enthusiasts,

It’s been 17 months since I began Beard Revue. It’s been a helluva trip, and I expect it to last.

Those 17 months also were part of my longest bearding streak of three years, eight months (I had to shave my jaw in 2005 for a mole removal). In March, my beard reached four inches. Last week, I ended that streak.

In part, it was in celebration of Moustache May; also because no man should be denied the experience of a hot-towel, straight-razor shave; and, lastly, because this time of year always puts me in the mood for change.

Regarding the shave, I found the only place in Portland that offers such a service: Rook’s Barbershop. Whether it was the instant nostalgia I found in the smell of the shop inciting memories of my grandfather’s shop in New England all those years ago or the complimentary brew upon my arrival, I became instantly intoxicated.

{ Justin }

Justin, who opened Rook’s in April, is an easy-going guy. Though quite a bit younger than the gentlemen I remember in Pop’s shop, has honed his craft like a seasoned pro.

The process was quite relaxing. After a quick trim, I was treated to a healthy lathering and a hot towel to moisten the shaving cream. A conversation, some bay rum, a dab of aftershave and maybe 20 minutes later, I sat up from the chair with a bare chin. I lack the words to express exactly what I felt, but I imagine the hot-towel, straight-razor shave inspired in me the same sensation that ladies gab about after a day at the spa.

Yay for photos:

I have to note that Colin Kloecker’s shave and wax at Heimie’s (Minneapolis Saint Paul) was instrumental in my inspired about-face. If you have to shave, do it right. And if you’re in Portland — or within a hundred miles — don’t deny yourself the opportunity for a proper shave at Rook’s.

Sincerely,

Michael Buchino
Beard Revue

Postscript: This is by no means an endorsement to lose all facial hair. I am a true blue beardy, but I dig the ’stache too. It is likely my mandible will never be exposed again.

Beard or no beard, you're an astonishingly handsome man. And when did solo mustaches go out of style, anyway? Do what makes you feel good, and grow the beard again when you're in the mood. (And be grateful you have the genes to grow such great facial hair!)

Thanks for the site as well.

While your beard waits to grow back, I will continue to enjoy your poster with its flowing, multi-hued beard.

You need to be an extra on Gangs of New York 2! That is a great stache! Some day my dreams will come true and I too will adorn one.

I hate to be a nag, but Heimies Haberdashery is in Saint Paul, not Minneapolis. There is a difference, but the difference may be more important to the locals! ;)
